Storm Event

Severity ? 1

Source

The storm developed on the east coast of the US on the 20thof December and moved eastward towards Europe. On the 23rdof December, the storm was combined with another low-pressure system in the mid-North Atlantic, which created the strong south-easterly winds that were reported in the Solent. On the 25thof December, the low-pressure system was over Germany generating north-easterly winds and a storm, which coincided with a high tide was reported on the Isle of Wight, affecting Cowes and Ryde (Boza, 2018).

Pathway

The sea was overtopping the esplanade and causing breach on a sea wall at Ryde and the waves struck the walls above 30 feet (Boza, 2018).

Receptor and Consequence

This event was associated with coastal flooding in Cowes and Ryde, Isle of Wight. A flood at Lymington was also reported, possible caused by the same storm reported in Isle of Wight, causing a storm surge that coincided with high tides (Boza, 2018).
