A severe gale with terrific force blew from the north-east accompanied by exceptional heavy rain caused the sea to pound against the sea wall with great violence (Hickey, 1997).

This event was mentioned in a compilation of historical coastal floods in North West Europe developed by Hickey (1997) and was associated with a storm surge in Buckie. The water washed away part of the embankment and left the rails without support.
