Severity ? 3

Source

High tides and tremendous seas causing widespread flooding in Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Needles coastguard stated there were winds of 70mph with gusts up to 100mph (Akehurst, 2011).

Pathway

Water poured over the sea wall. Sea defences at Ryde and Seaview were pounded and damaged (Akehurst, 2011).

Receptor and Consequence

The Strand Hotel and several properties along The Strand were flooded as well as properties in Lower Westhill Road, Simeon Street, Spencer Road, East Street and Appley Rise (Akehurst, 2011). Roads were reported flooded, including: Quay Road and the Hovercraft terminal, road along Ventnor front and Victoria Pier main road, main road at Freshwater Bay, Well Road, Castle Street, Link Road, Bridge Road at Cowes and Bath Road, Lymington where water rushed in at high velocities making it difficult for rescuers to stand in the water. The coast road between Egypt Point and Gurnard was closed for the weekend due to flooding with flood water reaching nearly 2 foot at Egypt light. Water poured over the sea wall damaging several parked cars. Ryde lifeguard headquarters were damaged when a low lying brick wall supporting the structure was scooped out by the weight of the water coming over the sea wall. An open air swimming pool was flooded in Lymington as was the area around the sailing club and harbour masters offices where staff were evacuated. A pony was reported dead.
