Storm Event

Severity ? 1

Source

The ninth named storm in the 2015/16 season – Storm Imogen – generated rough seas and consequent overtopping in parts of the south coast during this event (BBC, 2016a). The storm Imogen started to develop on the 5thof February and moved north-east towards the UK. On the 7thof February, the storm combined with a low-pressure system located south of Iceland and the central pressure dropped to about 960 mbar (Boza, 2018). On the 8thof February, the storm travelled across Scotland and brought strong westerly and south-westerly winds mainly to the south coast of England (Met Office, 2016).

Pathway

Huge waves crashed over Southsea sea wall (BBC, 2016a).

Receptor and Consequence

The overtopping of the waves in Southsea caused mild flooding and the closing of the seafront. Roads in Guernsey and Jersey were also flooded by sea water after Storm Imogen coincided with high tide (BBC, 2016b). Road near Lower Brockhampton in Dorset was also reported flooded (Eleftheriou-Smith, 2016).
