A North Sea storm surge was reported to hit Whitby. In the afternoon, high tide reached 5.8 metres combined with waves up to 22 feet off the coast of the town (Kilpatrick, 2017).

The Esk breached its bank causing flooding on Church Street and New Quay Road (Kilpatrick, 2017).

Receptor and Consequence

Reports of flooding coming in from Whitby. Huge wave reached Pier Road moving the ice cream kiosk with it. Flooding was also reported on Church Street and neighbouring houses and New Quay Road as well as on town centre and holiday resort. ‘The waves have just moved a kiosk and sandbags from the slipway and taken lots of people off their feet’, photographer Ceri Oakes tweeted (Eden, 2017).
