Storm Event

'A large wave came up and taken all that wall away with it’

Severity ? 3

Source

The fifth named storm in the 2017/18 season – Storm Eleanor – has caused widespread disruption across UK and flooding in some places (Met Office, 2018).

Pathway

The storm caused a 40 foot section of Portreath harbour wall collapsed. ‘A large wave came up and taken all that wall away with it’ as the chairman of the Portreath Harbour Association described the situation (Press Association, 2018). Sea walls were overtopped along the north coast of Cornwall (Met Office, 2018). The sea wall at St Ives was also reported to have been breached by the high tides. The tidal surges also breached the seawall at Mudeford Quay, Dorset (Press Association, 2018).

Receptor and Consequence

Some flooding was reported in the south-east of England, Wales and southern Scotland (Met Office, 2018). Along the north coast of Cornwall, buildings were damaged as a result of the sea overtopping sea walls.

Below are some of the places that was reported to have been flooded in the aftermath of Storm Eleanor:

  • A road in New Brighton, on the coast of the Wirral Peninsula, in Merseyside.
  • A road in Newquay, Cornwall
  • Langstone Harbour at Eastney, Portsmouth (Press Association, 2018).
