Storm Event

Severity ? 2

Source

On the 3rd of December, there was a small low-pressure system, over the mid-North Atlantic, over north-eastward towards the UK (Boza, 2018). Low pressure and high winds caused localised flooding in Solent and Bristol area.

Pathway

Minor overtopping was observed in Old Portsmouth and Langstone.

Receptor and Consequence

This event was associated with localised flooding in areas of the Solent, Hampshire (Ruocco et al., 2011Haigh et al., 2015). Local roads were inundated in Cowes and Hamble-le-Rice, some up to 1 m in depth. Coastal flooding was also reported in the Severn Valley at Gloucester (Zong and Tooley, 2003).

In the Avonmouth region, Pill and Shirehampton were submerged under a foot of water in a number of streets with some houses mildly flooded (Young, 2018). From Hinkley Point region, 12 houses were damaged by 2 inches of water in Stolford. A large storm surge also caused the villages of Boverton and Llantwit-Major to be flooded, including 9 houses and some roads (Young, 2018).
