Storm Event

Severity ? 2

Source

High tides combined with the remnants of Hurricane Lili caused severe flooding (Knight, 2016).

Pathway

Some overtopping were reported in Portishead and Pill (Young, 2018). Sea overtopped defences also reported at Westgate, Kent (Scoones, 2018). Shingle washed onto promenade destroying sea defences and flooding the promenade in Brighton (Lawrence, 2017). There was a breach on October 29th in the gravel barrier at Porlock Bay, Somerset which subsequently allowed flooding of the marshland behind (Haigh et al., 2015).

Receptor and Consequence

On 28th October 1996, there was localised flooding in the Solent, Hampshire including parts of Emsworth and Langstone where some areas were flooded to a depth of 3 ft. [0.91 m], with the high street at the latter location inundated over a length of 50 ft. [15.24 m] (Ruocco et al., 2011). Other affected areas included Gosport, Southsea and Hayling Island. Isle of Wight was also affected by flood including East Cowes, Gurnard, High Street, Well Road and Princess Esplanade (Akehurst, 2011).

At Marina Parade, Dover, water even carried car into the middle of the road (Lawrence, 2017). Houses were flooded in Portishead and Pill. Large waves also damaged the seafronts in Barry, Cardiff, and Newport flooded many homes along the coast.

Knight (2016) reported that areas worst affected at this event were Appledore, Bideford, Ilfracombe, and Combe Martin where dozens of houses, shops and hotels flooded.
